The Preseason Open Scrimmages are open to all players to experience our style of flag football in preparation for the regular season. The Green Team, made up of players, old and new, showed great defensive prowess in the second half, slightly edging the Blue Team, 21-14 on a cold, winday day in South Queens.
"It's always good when you walk away from the field with a win," said Green Team captain Christian Ortiz, whose nickname is "The Cannon", "It just shows what can be accomplished when all of the guys are on the same page, regardless of whether or not we all know eachother."
Ortiz finished the game 7 of 16 passing for 50 yards, with 1 touchdown and 1 interception, to go along with 4 rushes for 40 yards and a touchdown, and he also hauled in the 2 point conversion which made it a 7 point game with less than 3 minutes to go.
The wind is also to blame for a lot of misplaced balls, including an interception for Blue Team QB Brian Payton on the team's first drive deep in their own territory. With the wind being a factor, both teams would turn to the run, starting with Ortiz' 10 yard scramble for a touchdown after the turnover. On the ensuing drive, Payton would tuck it away and scamper for a 55 yard touchdown run of his own. Looking to go ahead two scores before half, the Green Team would falter, with Ortiz giving up an interception to the Blue Team's Diego Radlein in the end zone for a touchback to make it deadlocked at 7 going into the half.
The Green Team would take advantage of a turnover on downs by the Blue Team on their first second half possesion and Ortiz would find free agent Raymond Aleman in the back of the end zone for a 5 yard touchdown catch. The Blue Team would answer back, however, on a spectacular 48 yard touchdown gallop by Danzel Montgomery on a jet sweep to make it 13-7.
Sherwin Kendall would make an appearance at quarterback for the Green Team and led his team down the field on 8 play, 60 yard drive, capping it off with a touchdown toss to Akeem and successful two point conversion catch by Ortiz to make it 21-14 with less than 3 minutes left to play. Tyring to make something happen, Payton would throw long and get picked off by Bjorn Oliver in the end zone for a touchback. With the ball and just under a minute left, the Green Team inexplicably call three consecutive passing plays and watched as they virtually ate up no clock, giving the Blue Team the ball back with about 30 seconds remaining. The comeback was not to be had though, as the on field conditions were not conducive to the pass, and the Blue Team were unable to get down the field in time.
"It was a tough day out there," said Brian Payton, winning captain of the Giants Fans vs. Jets Fans Scrimmage for Men's Health. "I'm optimistic about our upcoming season and we showed today that we can be successful, when things aren't perfect, like the weather conditions."
Payton finished the game with on 5 of 15 passing for 60 yards with 2 interceptions and added 2 runs for 60 yards and a touchdown, as well as 3 tackles on defense.BOX SCORE
