The Preseason Open Scrimmages are open to all players to experience our style of flag football in preparation for the regular season. This was the third and tiebreaking preseason meeting of what figures to be two star quarterbacks in this league in the Jamaica Saints' Brian Payton and the Vipers' Christian Ortiz. Payton was able to drive his team down and score with 40 seconds
to take the lead and the win for the Blue Team.
"We are ready to go" said Blue Team Captain Brian Payton, who notched his 6th touchdown pass in the game, "Our goal is a championship this season and I personally wanted to get off on the right foot and show that I am capable of bringing the trophy home to the Saints."
Payton finished the game on 8 of 15 passing for 138 yards, 3 touchdowns, no interceptions, 3 runs for 14 yards and also a tackle.as well as the game-icing interception with no time left on the clock.
The two teams, who are largely familiar with eachother from playing together in preseason, focused on defense throughout. Saints' new addition Leon Newby, of the Blue Team would sytmie the passing attack of the green team, sacking Ortiz 3 times in the game. With their first drive ending in a declared punt, the Blue team would march 60 yards in 9 plays, culminating in an 8 yard touchdown throw from Payton to Newby to make it 6-0 early. The green team would respond with a 60 yard drive of their own, ending with an 11 yard Ortiz scramble for a touchdown and successful extra point attempt to make it 7-6 going into the half.
The second half is where both team's defenses would really sink their teeth in, first with the Green Team forcing a turnover on downs and then the Blue Team forcing an interception on the subsequent drive.Given the gift of a short field, Payton would find perennial all start wide receiver Bjorn Oliver for an 8 yard score. The Green Team would again answer back with a long drive, scoring on a picture perfect slant route by WR Raymond Aleman and successful conversion to give them a 14-12 lead with less than 3 minutes to go. That's where Payton would show his grit, lobbing a 28 yard bomb for Oliver for his fourth touchdown of preseason with 40 seconds left. Desperate to make a play, Ortiz would heave the ball downfield where Payton would come up with the game ending interception as time expired.
"I plan to correct the mistakes in time for the regular season," said Ortiz, who has 4 interceptions this preseason, "I learned a lot and will leverage this knowledge from preseason to our advantage and make our team better to contend for a championship this season."
Ortiz finished the game with 12 of 22 passing for 210 yards, a touchdown and 2 interceptions.BOX SCORE
