OTF showed why they belong in the upper eschelon of the league, beating last season's Southwest Division Champions, the Stallions, 48-20 on a snowy Sunday in Queens.
"We were able to get off to a good start," said OTF captain Luis Valmon, "Any time you are able to capitalize off turnovers with points, you put your team in a great position to win." Valmon finished the game with 1 catch for 23 yards for a touchdown, 2 tackles and one interception.
The game was competitive at the start with each team trading scores tying the game at 8 about midway through the first half. The Stallions would force a turnover on downs and get the ball back at the OTF 20. It seemed that they were poised to take the lead, but Mauricio Valmon would make a dazzling end zone pick and return it the distance for a touchdown, which would change the complexion of the game. Weather conditions continued to deteriorate, which would contribute to more Stallion turnovers, which OTF took advantage of. After receiving the ball off of his interception of May, Luis Valmon would make a 23 yard tip drill touchdown grab just before halftime to give OTF a 24-8 lead going into the half.
Despite the falling temperatures, OTF continued to sizzle after the break, with Mauricio Valmon finding WR/S Travis Poole for two touchdown receptions. The Stallions would not go quietly, however, as May would find Colin Stewart for a x yard touchdown, which closed the gap to 32-14. RB Anthony Velazquez would then turn on the jets up the sideline and outrun the defense for a 60 yard touchdown run, which would put the game out of reach for the Stallions. Mackenzie Williams would take over at QB for the final drive, taking the team down the field for a 2 yard toss to WR Bjorn Oliver to end all scoring.
"Obviously, we are disappointed in the way our defense played," said team captain Sherwin Kendall, "The weather played a huge factor and I know our team is better than this and we have the rest of the season to prove it." Kendall finished with 1 run for 5 yards and 2 catches for 32.BOX SCORE
