Just ask the Saints (3-0) how it feels to be scored on. They'd probably shrug their shoulders at the questions because they have not allowed a single point this season. They continued their score-and-not-let-score culture against the offensively inept King Cobras this past Sunday, annihilating their opponents 43-0, capturing the lead for the #1 seed in the South Conference and boasting the #1 scoring offense and defense in the league.
"We are here to win football games," said Saints' captain Brian Payton, " and common sense dictates that you won't win many football games if you can't execute on offense or get stops on defense in the red zone. I have great pride in what we've been able to accomplish in both phases to this point, but we're not done yet."
Payton hauled in 3 catches for 45 yards and a touchdown, and also made 3 tackles and 1 interception for the defense.
QB Christian Ortiz, who posted a perfect QB rating in a week 1 win vs. Cool Runnings, continued his stellar play and an almost perfect rating, going 6 of 10 for 159 yards, 3 touchdowns, no interceptions (143.7 rating) and added 3 runs for 18 yards, earning himself offensive player of the week honors.
The Cobras were able to move the ball efficiently in the first half on the arm and legs of QB Jeffrey Jean, entering Saints' territory on both first half drives, but then stalling out, finding themselves down a manageable 0-13. That's when disaster struck. The Cobras inexplicably put QB Quincy Dover under center, who had thrown 4 first half interceptions the week before against the Men of Mayhem and history repeated itself, as he threw another 2 interceptions, one returned for a 34 yard touchdown by WR/CB Brian Jackson. All this while the Saints' offense did not miss a beat, scoring on all of their second half possessions.
"We're real embarassed about the way we played today," said Jeffrey Jean, co-captain of the King Cobras, "But, we are young and hungry. We believe we can learn from our mistakes and only get better from here. We are still in the hunt."
Jean finished the game with 6 of 9 passing for 82 yards, and a rush for 25 yards.
Despite the loss, the Cobras (1-2) still have the Northeast Division lead via tiebreaker.BOX SCORE
