In a matchup of North Conference Division Leaders, the difference was 2 yards. King Cobras' QB Mackenzie Williams was stopped 2 yards shy of his goal line by BSHU captain Mike Gopie, on what possibly could have been a game tying score as time expired, giving BSHU a 20-12 win, the Northwest Division Title and also the #1 Seed in the North Conference.
"We just continued to do what we've done all season," said BSHU captain Mike Gopie, "We went out and made the plays went it counted and got the win by hook or by crook."
Gopie finished with 2 tackles including the touchdown saving tackle on the game's final play.
The offense of BSHU led by league leading passer Scott Gadsden continued to be scorching as WR Tarues Allen took a short pass and exploded through the secondary for a 74 yard touchdown on their first possesion. The King Cobras benched QB Ezra after an abysmal performance the week before against the Stallions in favor of Mackenzie Williams, hoping for a spark, and they got it immediately, as Williams led his team down the field and found WR Daniel Reid in the back of the end zone for a 25 yard score to tie the game at 6 at the half.
BSHU would answer back in the second half with a 25 yard strike by Gadsden to big play receiver Shane Phillips. Undeterred, the Cobras would get a big reception and run by co-captain Adrian Grandison for 55 yards and a touchdown from Williams to the other co-captain Jeffrey Jean for 25 yards the very next play.Gasden would then show why he deserved Offensive Player of the Week Honors for Week 7, methodically picking apart the Cobras secondary and finding WR Malcom Mercer for a 9 yard touchdown reception. However, the 2 point conversion that would have given BSHU a 2 possession lead was no good, and gave the ball back to the King Cobras with just over 2 minutes remaining. Williams would go on to march his team into BSHU territory and on a 4th down with no time left on the clock, the game would end with a touchdown saving tackle by MIke Gopie as Williams lunged for the goal line, but it was not to be.
"What a difference a week makes," said Adrian Grandison, co-captain of the King Cobras (3-4), "last week we were sent home early, and this week we faced a similarly difficult opponent and we were able to go to the wire with them. Our team has a lot of heart and we will bring it when we get to the playoffs."
The Cobras also clinched their division because of Average Joe's loss later in the day, and will face the Men of Mayhem (4-3) in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, with the winner to meet BSHU in the conference round.BOX SCORE
