All the Men of Mayhem had to do Sunday was win and they would be in and that's precisley what they did in typical Men of Mayhem fashion, pounding the rock - and their opponent - into submission with power running and stifling defense en route to a 12-8 victory over Average Joe's.
"We take pride in what we are able to do defensively," said Men of Mayhem co-captain Anthony Bohan, "Defense wins championships, and that's what we plan to do - create mayhem and turnovers on our way to the championship."
Bohan finished with a 2 catches for 9 yards and turned in a marvelous defensive performance with a tackle and 2 picks. Bohan, who leads the league in interceptions was also named Defensive Player of the Week for Week 7, the second such time he has won the award.
The game was a defensive battle from the beginning. Average Joe's was stymied every time they had posession, unable to cross midfield in the first half and going down 12-0 at halftime. Men of Mayhem, meanwhile was able to capitalize on one of Bohan's interceptions and good field position, scoring on two throws by QB Anthony Oropessa, one to a wide open Efrain Malave for 30 yards, and another for 12 to Sean Chowdhury.
Average Joe's would not go down without a fight, and mustered some defensive magic themselves, including an interception of Oropessa in the end zone by DB Justin Sanchez, which kept it a two possesion game. Joe's QB Bert Sarmiento could not figure out the brilliant defensive scheme by the Men of Mayhem and threw another interception to Bohan in the second half. Still, Average Joe's was able to force a 3 and out and after some penalties and a long completion to new addition Jeromy Lora, Sarmiento was able to connect with another new addition, Matthew McQueen for a 12 yard touchdown to close the gap to 12-8. But it was too little, too late as the Men of Mayhem ran out the clock to secure their win, thereby clinching the North Conference Wild Card and mathematically eliminating Average Joe's from playoff conention.
"We wish we had a little more time," said Frank Sabatino, designated captain of Average Joe's (1-6), "We were there at the end, but we just could not get going in the beginning of the game, which put us in a hole too deep to get out of. Our guys didn't let up when the chips were down against a heck of a football team. We wish them the best of luck in the playoffs."
The Men of Mayhem (4-3) will go on to face the Northeast Division champion King Cobras in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, with the winner to meet BSHU in the conference round.BOX SCORE
