In this week's Game of the Week, the Jamaica Saints, boasting the #1 scoring defense in the league went up against takeaway machine the Men of Mayhem in a hard nose defensive game where scoring was a premium. The last score of the game, a 31 yard diving catch by WR/CB Corey Glenn sealed the victory for the 4-0 Saints, who have already clinched a playoff berth, only halfway through the seaosn.
"We knew it was going to be a knockdown drag out fight," said Jamaica Saints captain Brian Payton, "The Men of Mayhem are a tremendous defensive force and we were able to play a smart football game and keep our mistakes at a minimum to get the victory."
Payton rushed 4 times for 46 yards, caught 1 pass for 12 yards, and recorded 2 tackles and a drive ending interception in the end zone on defense.
The two teams went toe to toe most of the game, with not much fireworks in the game, but plenty of defensive plays. After driving down the field on the first drive of the game, the Men of Mayhem coughed up the football off an interception throwin in the end zone by Anthony Bohan, who would later on repay the favor by intercepting Saints' QB Christian Ortiz in his end zone. The Saints took an early 8-0 lead following a 70 yard completion from QB Christian Ortiz to WR Danzel Montgomery and another 5 yard flip that found WR Naveed Qureshi in the end zone. That was all for scoring in the first half, as both defenses clamped down and were not giving an inch.
To start the second half, after the Saints turned the ball over on downs in their own territory, Men of Mayhem RB/DT Chris Gonzalez rumbled in for a 20 yard score and after a declared punt by the Saints on the ensuing possession, QB Anthony Oropessa found team captain Sean Chowdhury for a 2 yard score to make it 12-8 midway through the second half. After driving down the field, the Saints went marching in on 31 yard spectacular grab by WR/CB Corey Glenn. The Men of Mayhem would make one last gasp, however, the Saints' defensive star, Danzell Montgomery would seal the victory for his team with an interception, his third of the season.
"We were one play away," said Sean Chowdhury, captain of the Men of Mayhem (2-2), "These kinds of losses are tough, but I am extremely proud of our tenacity and heart out there today and we will be ready to bring it each and every week."
Chowdhury finished the game with 5 rushes for 28 yards, 2 receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown, and a tackle on defense.BOX SCORE
