The Saints who burst onto the scene starting 5-0, suffered 2 losses in a row, albeit to the two #1 seeds in the league. Despite having nothing to play for, the Saints did not want to end their season on a three game skid and took care of business at Cool Runnings, winning 34-6, previously posting a 28-0 win in Week 1 against their division mates.
“I’m glad we were able to get back to our winning ways,” said Saints captain Brian Payton, “We will need our offense and defense to be on the same page in the playoffs if we are going to win a championship. I appreciate all the hard work my guys put in for eight weeks to put us in a position to have a shot at it.”
Payton went 3 of 10 passing for 51 yards, 2 touchdowns, 3 runs for 47 yards, 1 catch for 27 yards and a touchdown, and a tackle on defense.
Cool Runnings has been mired by injuries all season long. Despite being injured, they have found a way to stay in games, but have lost some close heartbreakers. That would not be the case today, as the Saints took control early and did not let up. Team Captain Brian Payton started the game at QB and was able to find Marl Vixamar for a 25 yard touchdown and on the next drive, WR/S Danzel Montgomery for a 14 yard score to put the Saints up 14-0 at halftime.
QB Christian Ortiz would come into the game to start the second half and pay dividends right away after a 27 yard scramble out of bounds, he was able to double it up and find Payton in the corner for a 27 yard touchdown. On the very next play, Amit Kuarllal would give up a pick six to Danzel Montgomery that made it 28-0 and would put the game out of reach for good. The suffocating Saints kept the clamps on and were looking for their third shut out win of the season, before Cool Runnings QB Eijaz Khan would show some nifty moves and take it 55 yards to the house on the game’s final play.
“It’s been a tough season for us,” said Gregory Young, captain of Cool Runnings (0-8), “It’s never easy to play through injuries, but we are going to get healthy and stronger and put together a squad that will be more competitive next year.”
Young finished with 2 catches for 20 yards and 4 tackles.
The Saints will move on and face the Southern Conference Wild Card Winner, BK Storm (4-4) in the first round of the playoffs on April 27th at 3:15pm.
